Why Struggling with Writing Shouldn’t Get in the Way of a Love for Writing ✍️

The other day, my daughter told me that maths is her favourite subject at school, which surprised me because she really struggles with the subject. Yet, she loves it. 🤯

It reminded me of my own school days. I was not a particularly sporty boy, to put it mildly. But despite my lack of athletic ability, I actually loved PE. Why? Because my PE teacher understood that you don’t have to be a natural at something to enjoy it.

He knew I wasn’t going to be picked for the football team (not that I wanted to be—far too rough! ⚽). But he encouraged me to have fun, focus on what I could do, and just have a "jolly good go" at it. 🏆

So, what does this have to do with writing? ✍️

Far too often, kids who struggle with writing feel like they can’t possibly enjoy it.

“I can’t spell!” “I don't get commas!” “Sentences are tricky!”

And those things are important (important enough that I built my business around it! 🚀)

But surely writing has to be so much more than getting everything technically perfect.

Just like PE isn’t only about being the fastest or the strongest, learning to write isn’t just about flawless grammar. It’s about creativity, expression, and storytelling. It’s about having a go, finding your voice, and enjoying the process.

And of course, the more you do it, the better you get. 💪

As adults, we can take a leaf out of those teachers’ books. We can encourage fun, give praise, and gently advise our young writers, even though their writing is far from brilliant at the moment. 📝

Because one day, with our help – it will be! 🌟
